Rifka and The Christmas Elf has been written for 5-8-year-old children and is illustrated with delightful, full-colour paintings by primary school children living in West Aberdeenshire. The book is the result of a community project in which over 510 children, from 8 schools took part. 27 of their pictures have been included in the book, with another 30 thumbnail images on the back cover.
The story is about a young Elf who makes a mistake that leaves a sack of presents for the children of NE Scotland behind at the North Pole. Rifka, who is a very friendly gnome, comes to the rescue and Santa lands his sleigh inside the hillfort on Tap o’Noth, a local landmark, to pick up the missing sack.
All profits from every book sold will go directly to Charlie House, a children’s charity in NE Scotland that supports babies, children and young people with complex disabilities and life-limiting conditions and their families. Please see www.charliehouse.org.uk for more information.
Full details of this community project can be found on the Facebook page for ‘Rifka and the Christmas Elf’. https://www.facebook.com/Rifka-and-the-Christmas-Elf-157549138484484
‘This is a book not only for, but also by children. The accompanying illustrations were all drawn by primary school pupils from West Aberdeenshire and are a real feast for the eye. They are colourful, joyful, beautifully drawn and each one is a wee story in itself. The children and their parents must be extremely proud of their great artwork here. The story engagingly and magically unrolls to tell a tale which feels like it’s coming straight from the mouth of a loving parent into the ear of an enraptured child….
The Rifka Books are beautifully produced and heart-warmingly sold to raise money for Charlie’s House. Every single penny raised from sales of the Rifka books goes towards this wonderful Aberdeenshire charity, which engages with projects and activities supporting babies and children with life-limiting conditions and extremely complex needs, as well as giving much needed support to their families. Buying a Rifka book doesn’t just ensure a storytelling treat for your own child, it ensures vital funds go towards making young and difficult lives much better for the most vulnerable children in the community. It’s impossible to think of any better reason to get to know Rifka and to know the marvellously talented writer and children who bring him to such colourful life for us. Rifka would definitely give that a big Elemental thumbs-up from bairns everywhere!’
